Dear ABC Families, Teachers, and Staff
I want to start this letter by thanking our wonderful ABC community and our amazing staff for dealing with the challenge of closing schools due to the COVID-19 virus. It was just over a week ago when the Board of Education authorized me to close schools. Since that time, the District’s teachers and staff took extraordinary measures to meet the needs of our students and families.
This week, both Governor Newsom and Los Angeles County released directives for residents to stay at home. Both of these orders are aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus. At ABC, we are concerned about the health of our students, families, and staff. That is why I am informing you that we will be extending the current school closure until May 5, 2020. As you are well aware, this is a dynamic situation, and we will continue to keep you informed during this time when our schools are closed.
Governor Newsom instructed districts to provide high-quality education during school closures, and our team used this as a guide in developing the new Online Learning at Home Program, or, as we call it, OLAH. This program went live this past week and brings classroom lessons and learning into our student’s homes. We need your help to make sure our students are continuing to log in to their Google Classroom each day to get the latest information from their teachers. Please visit our OLAH website for the latest updates about this program. I am so proud of the work that our teachers and staff put into bringing this program to students.
Work at our school sites continues as well. Our Nutrition Services team has been providing meals to students in need at schools, spread across the communities we serve. Teams from maintenance and custodial services are deep cleaning all of our campuses. This past week, we provided hundreds of devices and internet “hotspots” to students so that they can access OLAH’s online curriculum.
In order to comply with the directives from Governor Newsom and Los Angeles County, the District Office will continue to be closed to the public with much of our staff working from home. Schools will remain closed to students except for meal service, which will operate as a “grab-and-go” service.
I realize that this is a difficult time for many of us. Schools are a constant in our community, and the daily routines for our students, families, teachers, and staff have been disrupted. My hope is to see everyone back on our campuses soon. Until that time, my thoughts are with everyone in the ABC community.
